SMU women win title, Tulsa men take home third-straight cross country championship

WEST CHESTER, OHIO - SMU’s women edged Tulsa in a tight race, while the Tulsa men made it three-straight at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships, Saturday morning.
 
The women got things started and SMU came out on top by two points, halting Tulsa’s reign, 45-47. The Mustangs earned the victory with three runners coming in in the top six, led by freshman Hannah Miller, who finished second with a time of 20:23.6. Fellow freshman Charlotte-Tara Murphy (20:44.1) and senior Holly Archer (20:54.5) finished in fifth and sixth, respectively. After SMU and Tulsa, Memphis finished third with 96 points, followed by UConn (145) and UCF (157) to round out the top five.
 
Individually, no one could catch Anne-Marie Blaney from UCF. The senior blazed through the course in 20:14.0 to finish almost ten second faster than Miller as Blaney took home the prize for top individual finisher.
 
On the men’s side, Tulsa made it three-straight American Athletic Conference cross country titles cruising to a victory with 22 points. Tulane, who finished second, came in with 101. Luke Traynor led the Golden Hurricane and won the individual title with a time of 23:39.9, almost 25 seconds faster than teammate and runner-up Benjamin Preisner. Tulane’s Emmanuel Rotich took home third, with a time of 24:17.1, but Tulsa rounded out the top five with Henry Pearce (24:20.5) and Adam Roderique (24.22.5) crossing after Rotich. Cincinnati came in third with 109 points, as UConn (114) and Temple (121) rounded out the top five.
