American Conference/ Ben Solomon Men's Soccer 11.13.16 Tulsa Wins 2016 American Men’s Soccer Championship Follow @American_MSoc TAMPA, FLA. – The American Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship went to overtime for the fourth consecutive year, and second-seeded Tulsa outlasted No. 1 seed USF 4-2 on PKs Sunday afternoon at Corbett Stadium to claim the conference crown for the third consecutive season. Sunday’s championship game, which was carried live on ESPN3, will air tape delayed on ESPNU at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT. In penalty kicks, USF’s Gonzalo Rodriguez made a shot to even things up at 2-2. Zack Stavrou (Tulsa) converted a shot on the next attempt to put the Hurricane up 3-2 while the Bulls’ equalizing tally came up short on the next attempt. Tulsa senior Ray Saari converted the next penalty kick for the Hurricane to give Tulsa the championship title. The two teams finished tied in shot attempts at 11 after 110 minutes of play, while USF had a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. The Golden Hurricane had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Tulsa was called for 11 fouls while the Bulls were whistled for eight. In regulation, Nazeem Bartman got USF on the board in the 52nd minute when he found the back of the net on an assist from Marcus Epps. The Bulls held on to the 1-0 lead until Juan Sanchez scored in the 72nd minute for the Hurricane to tie the score at 1-1. Tulsa goalkeeper Jake McGuire made five saves, while USF keeper Spasoje Stefanovic stopped three shots. Tulsa won the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship and will await their seeding for the Men’s College Cup. The NCAA Championship selection show is set for Monday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on www.ncaa.com.
