The NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee has announced the teams and individuals selected to participate in the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Regionals, and The American has three teams and two individuals in the field.
UCF, the league's automatic bid, was selected for the Athens Regional while Houston (Columbus Regional) and SMU (Albuquerque Regional) were chosen as at-large bids. Additionally, East Carolina junior Lisa Pettersson and Memphis sophomore Michaela Fletcher were selected to participate as individuals at the Athens and Columbus Regionals, respectively.
The Knights enter the Athens Regional as the No. 7 seed. It is UCF's fifth NCAA Regional appearance in the last six years. They have qualified for an NCAA Regional 13 times in the past 23 years.
This marks the third season in which the Cougars will compete in NCAA Regional play. A year ago, sophomore Leonie Harm tied for seventh at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional and competed as the 2016 NCAA Championships as an individual, the first Cougar representative to compete at the nation’s top collegiate meet.
The Regional bid is the ninth overall and fifth consecutive for the Mustangs, with the highest placement coming in 2004 when SMU tied for ninth at the tournament.
With her selection, Pettersson will participate in her second-straight NCAA postseason event and is the fourth player in program history to earn an individual bid joining Adrienne Millican (2004), Lene Krog (2007) and Frida Gustafsson Spang (2015) – both Millican and Krog advanced to the NCAA Championships.
Fletcher earned an NCAA at-large slot for the second time in as many seasons. She won her way to the NCAA Championships from the Notre Dame Regional with a top five individual finish in 2015.
