Seven American Athletic Conference Tennis Teams Selected to the 2017 NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS – UCF, Memphis, USF, SMU, and Tulane men’s teams, along with the Tulsa and USF women’s teams were selected to the 2017 NCAA Tennis Championships, as announced on Tuesday evening.
 
The first and second round matchups will take place May 12-13 or May13-14 at assigned host sites, with the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and national championships held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, May 18-23.
 
USF (17-8) opens the 2017 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship against Duke (16-9) in Athens, Georgia. The Bulls won the American Athletic Conference Championship and earned the automatic qualifier for the fourth consecutive season with a 4-1 win over UCF at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida on April 23.  USF finished the regular season with a 14-8 overall record behind the strong play from No. 66 Sasha Gozun. The Bulls also feature ranked doubles team – No. 41 Alberto Barroso-Campos teaming with Gozun. USF appears in the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in as many years.  
 
SMU (13-11) begins the 2017 NCAA tournament against Mississippi State (20-8) in Norman, Oklahoma. The Mustangs closed out the regular season with an overall mark of 13-10. No. 66 Ronald Slobodchikov and No. 93 Hunter Johnson pace SMU in singles, while Yates Johnson/Hunter Johnson (No. 24) lead doubles. The Mustangs will make their second straight NCAA appearance.
 
Tulane (22-7) opens tournament play against Washington (12-11) in Waco, Texas. The Green Wave produced a 22-7 overall record behind strong singles play from No. 17 Constantin Schmitz. In doubles, Sebastian Rey teamed with Chi-Shan Jao and the duo is No. 70 in the nation. Jao appears twice on that list while also teaming with Schmitz at No.78.  Tulane makes its second straight NCAA appearance. 
 
UCF (16-6) qualifies for the NCAA tournament and will take on No. 43 Louisville (21-9) in Columbus, Ohio. The Knights are headed back to the tournament for the first time since 2005. UCF put together a 14-5 regular season, led by Korey Lovett (No. 43) in the singles lineup.
 
Memphis (15-8) qualifies for its fifth NCAA tournament and will take on Oregon (18-6) in Los Angeles, California. The Tigers put together a 15-8 regular season, including a 4-3 win against then-No.18 Cornell. Ryan Peniston (No. 83) and Andrew Watson (No. 99) highlight Memphis’ singles lineup.
 
In the women’s bracket, USF (15-10) makes its first appearance since 2014 facing in-state rival Miami (12-11), in Gainesville, Florida. The Bulls earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament to continue their season after defeating Tulsa in the American Athletic Conference Championship match. USF entered the conference tournament seeded No. 7 and went on to defeat the No. 10, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 1 seeds to earn their title and become the lowest seeded team to ever win the championship. Sophomore Ana Roman Dominguez and Senior Vera Bessonova lead the Bulls in singles.
 
Tulsa (20-7) makes its 11th NCAA appearance as the Golden Hurricane advances to the 2017 NCAA tournament against No.21 LSU (14-10) in Berkley, California Tulsa defeated ranked opponents this season in No. 13-ranked Baylor and No. 30-ranked Kansas while winning six straight dual matches from March 3-15.Tulsa advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season for the fifth time in program history with a 4-1 win over Arkansas before falling to eventual runner-up Oklahoma State.
