PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly baseball honors for the week ending May 7.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tyler Dietrich • So. • C • USF
Dietrich helped the Bulls to a sweep over East Carolina and solo possession of first place in the conference. Dietrich hit .750 (6-for-8) with three hits in both games. He also finished with a team-high five RBIs and three runs scored, including being responsible for five runs in the first game of the series with the Pirates.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Trey Cumbie • So. • LHP • Houston
Cumbie threw a complete game against UConn, giving up only one earned run on six hits while striking out six. The sophomore lefty threw 120 pitches in the second complete game of his career, to guide the Cougars to a series-clinching win over the Huskies.
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Luke Hamblin • Sr. • OF • UCF
Hamblin helped lead the Knights to a 2-1 series win over Tulane hitting .412 (7-for-17) on the week. Hamblin hit three doubles, drove in four runs and scored three. He went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run in the Sunday finale against Tulane.
David Orndorff • Jr. • RHP • Cincinnati
Orndorff picked up a win and a save over the week throwing five shutout innings in relief. The junior earned a save against Wright State before claiming the series clinching win against Memphis pitching the last four innings, only giving up two hits while striking out three.
R.J. Thompson • Sr. • OF • Cincinnati
Thompson hit .444 over the last week with two doubles and a home run to help the Bearcats to a 3-1 week. Thompson drove in three runs and scored three with his best game being a 4-for-5 outing with two RBIs, a home run and three runs scored against Wright State.
Peter Strzelecki • Rs-Jr. • RHP • USF
Strzelecki became the first USF starter to go over seven innings, pitching 8.1 to finish the series sweep against East Carolina. Strzelecki gave up three hits and one earned run while striking out a career-high 10 batters.
J.P. France • Rs-Jr. • RHP • Tulane
France threw eight innings, only allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out eight batters in a 4-3 win over UCF. France retired 15-straight batters between the first and sixth inning.
