PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Tulsa redshirt-senior Marc Scott became the second Golden Hurricane to earn the USTFCCCA Men’s Indoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year award, while another 49 student-athletes (26 females, 23 males) from around the league joined him in making the organization’s All-Academic list, as announced by the USTFCCCA last week. Additionally, 15 American Athletic Conference track and field teams were recognized for their academic excellence.
Scott, an exercise and sports science major from North Yorkshire, England and nine-time All-American, earned the honor for placing second in the 5,000m and third in the 3,000m runs at the 2017 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, while holding a 3.47 GPA. Scott continued to have a standout senior season, winning gold at The American Outdoor Championship in 1,500m run and silver in the 5,000m run before being crowned the 10,000m run national champion with a first place finish at the NCAA Division I Championship.
He is just the second male athlete from Tulsa to earn this honor, joining former collegiate record holder Chris O’Hare in 2012.
Memphis led all league honorees with 14 All-Academic selections. For the men, the Tigers had the most student-athletes representing the conference with nine, while Memphis and Tulane shared the lead for the women with a tied five selections each. Tulane women also held the highest GPA in the league with a 3.587 mark, as the men’s Tulsa team had a conference-best 3.394 team GPA.
For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by
TFRRS.org.
For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
In order to be in contention for Scholar Team of the Year, a program must finish highly at the respective national championship meet and have at least a 3.00 cumulative team GPA. A combined total of 360 men’s and women’s Division I programs earned the honor this year.
A total of 752 women were recognized and 516 men from Division I institutions around the country.
Cincinnati, UConn, Memphis, USF, and Tulsa each had both their men’s and women’s programs listed for the award. Included were this year’s women’s indoor (UCF) and outdoor (Cincinnati) conference champions.
